Communications Workshops with Dr. Martin Sharp
Sponsored by the Canadian Polar Commission
- Session 1: 8 am to Noon
- Session 2: 1 pm to 5 pm
Dr. Martin Sharp from the, University of Alberta, will conduct two communications workshops on the effective dissemination of information.
The workshops will:
- Stimulate discussion as to why scientists should work to communicate their work to a broader audience and why they often feel challenged to do so.
- Present a tool (the “message box”) that can be used to formulate messages in a way that makes them accessible to specified audiences.
- Discuss the issues associated with communicating through the public media and strategies that can help scientists more effectively do so.
There is no workshop fee. Space is limited to 20 spaces per session and both the morning and afternoon sessions are now full.
Participants will need to do a small amount of reading prior to the workshop and to prepare a topic/issue to communicate in advance. Dr. Sharp will contact participants at least two weeks before the workshop to explain how best to prepare.
Dr. Martin Sharp
Martin Sharp is Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta.
He has been working to communicate his research to a broad public audience using print, audio and visual media since 1989 and has been active in the public debate regarding how to respond to climate change resulting from human activities. His interest in public communication of environmental science was recognized by an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship from the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford in 2008.
APECS Career Development Workshop

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) is conducting a career development pre-conference workshop to help early career researchers determine how to be most effective in their research area.
The workshop will begin with an APECS presentation and move on to a talk by session Chair and IPY International Programme Office Director,
Dave Carlson.
Following a short break, the session will then move on to a panel discussion and will conclude with a brief breakout session surrounding important professional development themes.
There is no workshop fee and no Registration is necessary.

The ACUNS Northern Resident Award (NRA) Panel will allow NRA recipients attending the conference to discuss their application process, their program of study and results and the contribution the NRA has made to their academic progress from a northern perspective.
The Northern Resident Award, sponsored by the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) is a unique program providing support to undergraduate students of Canada's northern territories.
There is no workshop fee and no Registration is necessary.
